FIRST TEAM 23 January 2010
“Snow,
snow, go away, come again another day” – preferably
about 2020 please, if you must!
Even
the Christmas traditionalists must have got
sick of it, and as far as rugby is concerned,
apart from the financial effect on clubs,
six weeks inactivity in our case since the
home 25 – 6 win over Percy Park on 12 December
has resulted in 3 postponed North 1 East League
games, players champing at the bit and re-scheduling
that leaves no free Saturday, Easter included,
between now and 10 April, on paper the last
league day of the season! Any further postponements
and doubtless the RFU will be wondering about
the wisdom of having increased league sizes!
So,
with a degree of normality finally restored
today, it’s good to welcome referee Paul Fincken
and in particular all from Carlisle for the
resumption of league proceedings, both at
First Team level and at Second Team in the
Candy League. To everyone else, welcome back
to Hollow Drift – it’s good to know you haven’t
forgotten where it is! All we need now is
a good game with preferably 2 points in the
bag and a busy bar afterwards!
Today
sees the return of City skipper Stuart Smithson
after injury for the first time since the
second game of the season, so the best of
luck to him.......... and spare a thought
for our antipodean brethren, one of whom,
Ryan Dawson, sits on the bench today having
landed in Durham on 13 December fresh from
the swelter of mid-summer Oz and had never
seen grass till this week!
Tomorrow
sees the Juniors back in action against West
Hartlepool, the Under 13s and 14s away, and
the under 15s and 16s at home, whilst the
Minis train and the Under v18s, to my knowledge,
have no game.
Socially,
it’s been a mixed Christmas, obviously not
helped by the weather. Another smashing Carol
Singing Night got us off to a good start,
a cracking Boxing Day carried it on, albeit
without the usual “Old-uns” versus “Young-uns”
game, but then came the cancellation of the
Bubbly Party because of lack of support! I
can but remind everyone that the Club’s financial
viability depends in large part on such events,
and whilst it may well be that the Bubbly
has run its course after nearly 40 years,
if it ain’t going to happen in future, an
appealing alternative has to be found and
all (clean!) suggestions would be welcomed!
Right!
That’s it, apart from revised League dates:
Saturday 6 February : Pontefract (Away)
Saturday 27 February : Sandal (Home)
Saturday 3 April : Billingham (Away)
Have
a good day!
Rugby Six Nations Cycle Ride 2010
“Roma
Tae Edinburgh”
www.dallagliocycleslam.com
February
to March 2010 - Dallaglio Cycle Slam
Lawrence
is currently in preparation for one his biggest
challenges yet – a 2,800km cycle ride across
Europe to raise £1million for a number
of causes.
Never
one to shy away from pushing the boundaries,
Lawrence will lead a team of cyclists including
celebrities from the worlds of sport, screen
and music to visit each of the six stadia
involved in the Six Nations rugby tournament
next year.
Starting
off in Rome for the clash between Italy and
England, Lawrence and co will pedal across
the continent, stopping in Paris, London,
Cardiff, Dublin and Edinburgh in the space
of 28 gruelling days in February and March
2010, watching a Six Nations match at each
venue on the way.
In
partnership with the BBC’s Sport Relief campaign,
the cycle ride will aim to raise £1
million for Sport Relief and the Dallaglio
Foundation, which in turn will support Cancer
Research UK, DebRA, the Help for Heroes campaign,
the PRA Benevolent Fund and the Leukaemia
Research.
