Finally the women's team season got started with an away trip to Doncaster. The game was played in a good spirit and the main difference between the 2 teams were that Doncaster have played together for a lot longer than the city team. A lot of the city team had never had chance to all train together before the match, but put together a good performance. City conceded two early tries in the game, with Doncaster exploiting their pace on the outside and used the advantage of the wind to put some long kicks over the top. City never let their heads go down and started to play some good rugby. City scored their first try late in the first half, with a good passing moving along the backs to put Alex in space on the outside who beat the last 2 defenders to score under the posts. Sara added the conversion to take city into half time. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with the Doncaster backs putting pressure on the city backs, city stayed strong and kept their heads up throughout the match and made Doncaster work hard to score their tries. The city forwards had the best of the scrummaging and took several balls against the head and got some good driving going to put pressure on Doncaster. City scored their second try mid way through the second half with a good drive in the forwards and some good close forward play allowed Laura to score in the corner. For all City lost the match there was a lot of positives in the game and the future now looks a lot brighter for the Women's team and after a bit more training time together I am sure the first victory is just around the corner! Well done to all involved in Sunday's game.
