Despite a very hard pitch and rather windy conditions, Durham City U9s continued to demonstrate their fine form that resulted in yet another win. Some of Durham's players combined with Seaton Carew (who only had 6 as a result of some cry offs on Mother's Day!) to enable the game to go ahead and we were very proud to see the commitment shown by all those who played on both sides. The game was good natured and allowed all of Durham City's U9s to play for at least half a match-something that has not always been easy this season with such a large squad!

Sunday 15th March 2009 was the most important date in our rugby calendar – the County Cup Competition. Where teams from right across the county would compete to see who had the best U9 rugby team this season. We were very excited and a bit nervous because we were the current county champions so everyone would want to beat Durham City.

We were so lucky because the weather was great, dry and sunny, perfect for playing rugby. We had a very strong squad of great players who had trained hard together and were determined to win.
Our first match was against Bishop Auckland. Durham City worked better as a team than our opposition, who only passed to one or two players so were easy to tackle or rip the ball from. We won 10-0 with 2 tries scored by William Hodgson and Joe Bellis. This proved to be a good warm-up match for Durham City and got us ready for tougher opposition.

Our next pool match was against Blaydon Falcons who proved to be easy competition due to weak tackling allowing Durham City to score try after try. We won 35-0 with Max Weightman and Robert Milbanke scoring 2 tries each and a further try each from me, William Jewitt and Alex Pearson.

Winning both of our matches got us through to the quarter final stage where we met another team from Blaydon – Blaydon Red Kites. By this stage everyone was playing with confidence and we could get to the final.

Parents and supporters were now shouting very loudly for Durham to win and it worked! We beat Blaydon Red Kites 30-0 with two tries from William Hodgson and further tries from Nico Goeta, Joe Blackbourne, James Coxon and Alex Pearson.

Semi-final time! Yarm were our opposition, a strong team who managed to find a gap and score the first points against Durham in the competition, despite a strong tackle from Max Weightman as they crossed the line. In spite of this, Durham put 25 points past Yarm with all the tries coming from two players – James Coxon scored 3 tries and William Hodgson scored 2 tries.

Durham City were now watching Sunderland v Mowden Park to see who they would face in the final. They were both very tough opposition and we knew whoever we played in the final, it would be a tough match. Sunderland won 5-0. They would be our opposition in the final!

The final – This was our toughest match of the day. Our parents and grandparents were screaming by now and were really nervous. We all tried our best and played as a team and managed to win the final 5-0 with a great try from Robert Milbanke.

We are the U9’s County Champions for the third year running, we felt unbeatable and so successful. Mark Berriman, Chairman of minis rugby, presented all the awards. When we received our cup there was a huge cheer. Everyone on the squad drank ‘beer’ (Shandy Bass) from the cup – Champions again!

Thank you to our coaches, Mark and Clare, who gave us lots of confidence and helped us to win the cup. I am so lucky to be a part of Durham City U9’s because they are all my friends and great rugby players.

It was a great day for Rugby. Especially as we played outside on grass!

Our first game was against Barnard Castle. We were a bit slow to start and Barney scored the first try. A try by Joe Blackbourne at the last play pulled us back & saw us drawing as the half time whistle went.
At the start of the second half James Coxon came on as sub and immediately lifted the team. We had to work hard to keep Barney at bay with some great tackling from Robert Milbanke who deservedly won ‘Man of the Match’. James scored 2 great tries to see Durham City win the game 15-5. We played really well in the Hartlepool game and were easy winners. Barney went on to beat Hartlepool in the final game of the day.

Player of the match: Ryan Lockett

Match Comments: William Hodgson

We played Darlington at Soccarena this week as Hollow Drift is still water-logged. The pitch was smaller than we are used to and I don’t think it suited our style of play.

Darlington were a very aggressive side and scored the first try (0-5). Gary Adamson gave us some useful tips at half time but Darlington scored another try, taking the score to (0-10). I scored the next try (5-10), Darlington scored again to make it (5-15), then a great run by James resulted in another try for Durham (10-15). We began to push Darlington hard which eventually gave us another try following a brave run by Nico levelled the score to 15-15.

It was a hard match and I think we did really well to pull back and get a draw. I would like to thank Gary Adamson and Trevor Coxon for stepping in as referee and team coach, they did a great job under tricky conditions and amazingly all 17 of us played in the game at some stage.

After a great result and performance against Billingham last week, we had a tougher challenge this week with the visit of Sunderland Rugby Club. The ground was wet and very muddy before we started and I knew we would all definitely need a shower after this game. Sunderland opened the scoring with a try almost from the beginning and they were quick through the middle. We levelled the score soon after, the game became very tough in the slippery conditions and we had to put a lot of tackles in to keep Sunderland at bay. At half time it was 15 all and a very close game. In the second half we managed to work harder at tackling and with great runs from Robert, Will and Jamie we extended the lead to 40 - 15. It was a great performance by the team especially in that mud!

Player of the match: Adam Morris

Match Report: Nico Goeta

I think we did good runs and definitely a lot of tries but we still need to pass the ball more. In the first half we were winning a good 40-0 and did some whopper good tackles. In the second half we kept in good shape but Sunderland were defending better and they scored 2 tries. We were still tackling very well but not as good as in the first half. The final score at the end was 85-10. Everyone was super muddy and definitely needed a shower after that but we all got a nice hot dog after a long muddy day.

Report on the day: James Coxon

It was a nice sunny but cold November morning, our pitch was muddy as usual, just right for a good game of rugby and the competition - Blaydon.
When we arrived there were lots of students throwing dustbin lids (frisbies) at each other all over our pitches, very confusing!!!
Back to the game - Blaydon had improved from the last time we played them and got stronger, but both Lions and Tigers were again Winners.

We were good at tackling but need to concentrate at not doing high tackles. We also still need to pass more. It was very muddy and it was hard to hold or pass the ball, but we had lots of fun.

Thank you to our coaches, Mark and Clare, who gave us lots of confidence and helped us to win the cup. I am so lucky to be a part of Durham City U9’s because they are all my friends and great rugby players.

Player(s) of the Tournament: William Hodgson & James Coxon

Last minute note from the Chairman:

I was lucky enough to watch the final and what a game – guts, determination, teamwork and sportsmanship – a real credit to yourselves, your coaches, your parents/guardians and to Durham City RFC – everybody at the club is immensely proud of the whole of the U9 squad for their hard work in achieving their success – and of course adding to the earlier season success of winning both the Cup and Plate in the Durham County RFU ‘7s’ tournament – a mini ‘grand slam’ so to speak.

Brilliant - keep it up.

Mid season review - January 2009

Durham City U9s have now completed the first half of their season (2008 – 2009) in which they have played some very skilful rugby. As a result of this they have scored 120 tries and some superb tackling has meant only conceding 20 tries so far. Tries scored (up to and including Sunderland game on 25th January):
William Jewitt – 7                              Sean Brogan – 1                         Adam Morris – 14
Max Weightman – 7                          James Coxon – 14                      Nico Goeta – 16
Joe Blackbourne – 6                         Robert Milbanke – 13                   Joe Bellis – 2
William Hodgson – 12                       Alex Pearson – 9                        James Wood – 1
Ryan Lockett – 8                              Jamie Adamson – 8                    Sam Palmer-Muttitt – 1
Cameron Fyfe - 1

Every player has demonstrated their own individual talents on the pitch and the opposition coaches are tasked with making the difficult decision in having to pick a Player of the Match. To date these players are:
Sean Brogan x 2                               James Coxon x 3                        Nico Goeta
Robert Milbanke x 3                          William Hodgson                         Ryan Lockett x 2
Jamie Adamson                                Adam Morris x 2                         Alex Pearson
Overall, Clare and Mark are very proud of the level of commitment and the outstanding attitude shown by all the players and hope the rest of the season is as enjoyable and successful!

Sunday 19th October

We had another great day on Sunday against a very good Bishop Auckland team.
Fortunately we managed to scrape a victory. Ryton were slightly easier but they still gave us a stiff test. Pretty much everyone played at some stage which was great. We wish to thank everyone who attended. Bishop Auckland's coach/referee personally congratulated us all on our general play and our sporting behaviour; players, coaches and spectators alike.

See attachment for results and players.

We now have 5 weeks at home (training, game, training, etc.) which will be nice after 3 weeks on the road. There is lots to improve on in training and we are pleased that 3 extra parents have volunteered to help a little (Colin Hodgson, Geraint Morris & John Ridland). Many thanks to them.

This Sunday we hope to have a presentation for the County 7's trophy (by Durham's first team Captain, Grant Thompson). This is a great honour for our U9's and richly deserved. We hope that everybody will meet in the clubhouse after training and changing (say 12:15).

Sunday 12th October

Durham County 'Rugby Sevens' Champions 2008

We thought you would like to know that our U9's players did DCRFC proud on Sunday. We all had a fantastic day and managed to win the 'County 7's' tournament. We were the only club to enter 2 teams and both managed to win some silverware, which was absolutely brilliant.

The 8 teams competing were;

Group A: Middlesbrough, Bishop Auckland, Horden & Darlington

Group B: Durham Tigers, Durham Lions, Sunderland & Darlington Mowden Park

Unfortunately we were both drawn together in the same group but it worked out well for us in the end.

After a tough competition the 'Tigers' emerged as outright winners of the 'shield' following a hard fought final victory against Sunderland. The Tigers had reached the final having played a draw against Sunderland and then managing victories over Darlington Mowden Park, team mates the 'Lions'
and a semi final defeat of Horden.

The 'Lions' team also emerged as winners of the 'cup' competition. They showed tremendous spirit and courage by picking themselves up from losing their first three 'group stage' games to narrowly beat host's Middlesbrough in the semi final and then overcoming Darlington in their final.

It is a great boost for everyone involved with the U9's and we hope you will join us in congratulating all the players.

Please see results, photo's and scorers below. We will soon post something on the DCRFC website for the players to show their friends and family. If any parent can coax their child into writing a few words these will be posted up as well.

We understand there will be a feature on the tournament appearing in both this Friday's Northern Echo and Durham Times newspapers (hopefully anyway).
