Saturday
11th October
Durham City 39 – 10 Gateshead
A
good solid start by Durham City although both teams were guilty
for handling errors but with 10 minutes on the clock Durham City
took advantage from mounted pressure for the backs to spin wide
and Dan Pygal to score in the corner the conversion was un successful.
The game was quite evenly balanced in the next ten minutes but
with good work round the loose by Leison , Kilroy , Ed and Andy
Black City were able to produce more platform and once again the
pressure paid off for Metcalfe to score the second try. Walker
converted and the score was 12 – 0 to City with 15 minutes left
to play till half time. With Ottaway at this point in the game
in total control it was only a matter of time before City were
due another try and once again quick hands and good play in 13
and 15 area allowed Metcalfe to break and Walker to support to
go over for the 3rd try and a he also added the conversion. A
late Walker penalty ensured that City at half time were in a commanding
22 – 0 lead.
The
second half started off like the end of the first with City forwards
playing well and giving a good platform for Lowes who normally
plays at 13 but with a late cry off slipped the 9 shirt on and
played like he owned the shirt. More pressure built up and fantastic
back move with Ottaway doing a dummy scissors with inside centre
Purdy opened the gap for flying Metcalfe to split the defence
up and score his second try under the posts for Walker to convert.
Changes were made and Oates went from 6 into the front row and
Richardson replaced Kilroy in the second row which made the side
still as strong as ever and another try was scored from the platform
of good forward and back play. The forwards with black, Ed and
Leison hitting the ball up and resulted in Purdy (a student 6ft’8)
doing a scissors with Metcalfe for him to score his Hat – rick
and well deserved the conversion was added. Gateshead came back
with a try but a sloppy one a mad decision by full – back Walker
to cross field a kick when he did the hard work calling for the
mark but all that hard work was ruined by the blonde good looking
15. 5 minutes later City scored again with play deep in Gateshead’s
half a penalty was awarded to City and Metcalfe took it quickly
shrugged of the 15 to score in the corner and make his total to
4 tries. The conversion was missed by Ottaway but City had played
with smiles on their faces all day and although Gateshead scored
a late try the only winner’s of the day was the 18 players who
played in Gold and Blue a fantastic performance with Metcalfe
deservedly being awarded “The Man Of The Match”.
